I chose to study in the MSc Molecular Medicine programme at the University of Leeds because I really liked the fact that it combines academic excellence with a strong emphasis on practical, research-driven learning. This was the right course for me as I have always been fascinated by the human body, understanding diseases, and exploring molecular biology. This programme seamlessly combined all of these interests and gave me the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field. Before starting my studies in Leeds, I completed a BSc in Biochemistry and gained hands-on experience working as a lab technician in a hospital.
I found the modules Immunity and Disease, Stem Cell Biology and Human Molecular Genetics to be fascinating, though the highlight of the programme for me was definitely the research project. I enjoyed learning new techniques and gaining new skills, as well as being able to work independently in the lab. It was incredibly rewarding to know that I was contributing to something larger than myself. The tutors, lecturers and faculty were always available whenever we had any questions or queries, and they did a great job of fostering an environment where learning was optimal. Their support and guidance made a significant difference to my educational experience, allowing me to fully engage with the material and excel in my studies.
My academic background has been instrumental in helping me grasp new concepts and understand all facets of my role with the NHS Genomic Laboratory Hub. The foundation in genetics I gained during my studies at Leeds has enabled me to learn quickly and contribute effectively to my work in this clinical setting.
