Ed Sutherland

Profile

I graduated with a BA in Psychology and the completed my PhD under the supervision of Profs. Ken Manktelow and David Over, looking at the role of probability in reasoning. I then held a research fellowship at the University of Reading before my first lectureship at the University of Derby. I moved to Leeds in 1999 and have been here ever since.

Research interests

My first research interests were in reasoning and decision making and this continues with a particular emphasis on medical decision making and factors influencing patients’ choices. I also focus my students’ project work on advertising research, building on past experience in product design research.

Student education

I make a substantial contribution to teaching in the School of Psychology, as module leader for a number of modules across the degree, as well as providing UG, and PG supervision. contributing to a number of modules and acting as module co-ordinator for a number of these.

I am currently the lead in Psychology for the Teaching Excellence Framework and have previously held the post of Director of Student Education in the School. I currently represent the School at Faculty and University level on committees relating to student education and employability.

I am co-author of the UG textbook Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour with Nigel Holt, Andy Bremner and Michael Vliek.
