Student profile midwifery

Tyler Parkinson

Why did you choose the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds?
University of Leeds is renowned for its success, especially for Midwifery and its School of Healthcare. The university was highly recommended and I got such a positive vibe from the open and applicant days.
Why did you choose your course?  Why is it important for you to be studying it?
I chose the course following a personal bereavement which pushed me to pursue my dream career.  I really wanted to make a change to maternity services and improve the experience families have during the pregnancy and birthing continuum.
What were you doing before you started studying here?
I had just finished another degree in Injury Rehabilitation.

What has been the highlight of the programme/course?
Meeting my cohort. They were a fabulous bunch of ladies with such unique and inspiring backgrounds. Also helping to bring 21 new lives into this world and being the first person to hold each of them.

Did any particular modules or projects impress you?
All of the lecturers' personal research projects fascinated me, hence why Leeds was my top choice because of the first hand insight into new research.

What support have the tutors and other staff given you?
They are in contact with the students regularly and point us in the right direction. They constantly give feedback and ensure we know where to find all relevant information on Minerva or external programmes. They also communicate with our placements and liaise with the hospitals if we are in need. Referrals are always available too.

How do you plan to use what you have learned here?  How will doing the course benefit you / the organisation you work in?
I hope to eventually take over the role of bereavement midwife for Leeds and develop it into a fully efficient team.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
I plan to complete my preceptorship in Leeds and then go on to achieve my Band 6 here too.

What would you say to someone thinking of coming to study here?
Do it! The campus is beautiful, the city is amazing and homely, and the School of Healthcare is brilliant!

What do you think of the city of Leeds/Yorkshire?
Yorkshire is my home county, specifically West Yorkshire, so I feel right at home being in Leeds. It’s such a diverse and multicultural city which makes so many people feel welcome.
