Leeds offered me not just an education, but the chance to be part of something bigger – transforming hope into healing for patients worldwide.
I chose to study at University of Leeds because it stands as a beacon of innovation and excellence in cancer research. Its commitment to pushing boundaries through interdisciplinary collaboration inspired me to join a community dedicated to making real-world impacts. The opportunity to work on pioneering projects and learn from globally recognised experts ignited my passion for bridging the gap between groundbreaking discoveries and life-changing treaments. Leeds offered me not just an education, but the chance to be part of something bigger – transforming hope into healing for patients worldwide.
Watching my grandmother’s battle with cancer, and seeing the limitations of current treaments, fuelled my desire my desire to understand the intricacies of how tumours grow, adapt, and interact with their surroundings and the profound influence these processes have on human health. Over time, the hallmarks of cancer have highlighted its complexity to me, and I realised how desperately we need to find better ways to help millions of people survive and overcome this disease.
Before joining the University of Leeds, I completed my undergraduate degree in Biotechnology, where I built a strong foundation in molecular biology, ImmunoTechnology, and cancer biology. During my final year, I led a research project exploring the potential of gene editing in diabetes treament.
The MSc in Cancer Biology and Therapy at Leeds offered a comprehensive blend of advanced theoretical knowledge and practical research training. A key highlight was its research-led teaching, delivered by oncology experts, ensuring students engaged with the latest advancements in cancer biology, therapy, transitional medicine, and research. The programme emphasised hands-on experience through a substantial research project, allowing students to work on real-world challenges in state-of-the-art laboratories. The course allowed for focus on the small things, such as how to present effectively with dedicated feedback sessions, to equipping graduates with the skills needed for innovative cancer research and therapy development.
I found that all modules delivered as part of the MSc in Cancer Biology and Therapy at Leeds were impressive. Each module provided an in-depth knowledge of key areas in cancer research, from the molecular mechanisms of cancer biology to the latest therapeutic strategies. The modules on Methods in Biomedical Research and Molecular Biology of Cancer were particularly impactful. Additionally, the opportunity to work on a substantial research project with Dr Georgia Mavria, allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, which provided invaluable hands-on experience in cancer research. The integration of cutting-edge research and practical lab work throughout the course made it truly an enriching experience.
