The tutors were incredibly supportive and always willing to help with any queries we had. During the course, they regularly invited other academics to deliver talks on their careers. This was extremley helpful, as it introduced us to opportunities and roles, we might not have been aware of before.

The University of Leeds Medical Institute is a prestigious research university that provides access to renowned researchers. As someone interested in a research career, being in such an environment was essential for me, as it offered opportunities to engage in innovative research and network with leading professionals in the field.

As a current medical student at Leeds, with a strong interest in cancer research, I always knew that I wanted to pursue a master’s degree in this field. When researching courses, I was drawn to the Cancer Biology and Therapy MSc at Leeds because of its structure and the flexibility to choose specific modules.

The highlight of the programme for me was working on my fourth-month research project in a lab. This experience allowed me to reflect on the type of research I wish to pursue in my future career and helped me determine whether I enjoy working in a laboratory setting. During my masters, I also had the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people from various backgrounds, some of whom were doctors and other scientists. This was a wonderful experience which enabled me to build friendships that have continued well beyond my studies.

I particularly enjoyed the module on Cancer Drug Development, as it offered an in-depth understanding of the rigorous and lengthy processes involved in developing cancer drugs. I also had the privilege of meeting Professor Christopher Twelves, a world-renowned oncologist, who contributed to the development of the chemotherapy drug Capecitabine.

I found the staff and tutors at Leeds to be very encouraging – organising social events throughout the year where we could gather and get to know one another. The tutors were incredibly supportive and always willing to help with any queries we had. During the course, they regularly invited other academics to deliver talks on their careers. This was extremely helpful, as it introduced us to opportunities and roles, we may not have been aware of before.

Since completing the Cancer Biology and Therapy MSc at Leeds, I have had the opportunity to present my masters findings at conferences. After medical school, I aim to build on the knowledge gained from my master’s by entering an academic doctor in Oncology. This master’s degree has provided a strong foundation for my future career.

I would highly recommend coming to Leeds. The city is fantastic, with a vibrant nightlife, while still being compact enough to explore on foot. The people are friendly, and the university offers a wide variety of societies, ensuring that everyone can find something that interests them. Additionally, the course opens many doors, allowing students to pursue diverse interests and career paths. There are also numerous opportunities to get involved in various activities and to pursue further training.

I love the city of Leeds and Yorkshire. There is so much to do here, from cultural experiences like visiting theatres, to exploring the nearby Yorkshire Dales. After completing my degree this year, I decided to stay in Leeds and Yorkshire for my postgraduate medical training.
