Student midwife profile

Why did you choose the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds?
The School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds was my first choice. Having two teaching hospitals where I could complete my placements across the three years sold it to me. Being able to work with multi-disciplinary teams and specialist units is a fantastic experience; something which I know will play dividends as I build my skillset throughout the degree. The blended learning approach and flexibility is another bonus for me. As a mother of two young children, I would really struggle to complete my degree if I didn't have this flexibility.

Why did you choose your course?  Why is it important for you to be studying it?
I wanted to be a midwife from a very young age. I find the biology behind pregnancy fascinating. What an honour to be involved in such an incredible moment, bringing brand new life into the world. Since becoming a mother myself, I understand how much of an impact having a baby can have on both the body and the mind. From conception to the postnatal period, the journey that you embark on and the care you receive alongside can have a big impact. Being an advocate for women and their families during this time is the reason I chose to come back to education to study this course after 15 years.

What were you doing before you started studying here?
Prior to studying at Leeds, I worked in financial crime for a bank and had been with this employer for 10 years. During my last year working for them, I worked part time hours so I could complete my Access to Healthcare course at a local college. I also become an Antenatal Hypnobirthing instructor and held private courses in the area that I live in.

What has been the highlight of the programme/course?
One of the highlights of the course for me is meeting like-minded individuals in the cohort who share the same passion and enthusiasm that I do. It is really refreshing to know that the next generation of midwives are there to care and ‘be with woman’; an integral role in maternity services.

What support have the tutors and other staff given you?
The staff have been incredibly supportive and approachable. In lectures you feel like there is a safe space to ask questions. The staff are very knowledgeable and passionate - it really shines through. I always look forward to my lectures whether that be on campus or online.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
My plan for after graduation is to complete my preceptorship hopefully within the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. Further down the line I may look to complete my masters degree.

What would you say to someone thinking of coming to study here?
To anybody thinking about studying this course at the University of Leeds, I would say do it! The support you get is incredible, the placements are an amazing experience and the campus is a really nice place to spend your time.

What do you think of the city of Leeds/Yorkshire?
Leeds is one of the best cities for food and shopping. The beautiful Yorkshire countryside is pretty idyllic too.
