Exercise and Nutrition in Type 1 Diabetes: Implications for the rising tide of double diabetes.

Most of us are able to exercise and eat without giving it much thought. However, exercising and eating right can be particularly challenging if you have type 1 diabetes. The disease results in the destruction of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, necessitating life-long drug therapy in order to control blood glucose levels. Exercise and diet play a fundamental role in the pursuit of a healthful lifestyle, but also directly impact blood glucose control which can make the management of type 1 diabetes challenging. Further, a large proportion of people with type 1 diabetes also display features of type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome – a sub population often described as having ‘double diabetes’. This emerging phenotype now accounts for most people with type 1 diabetes. This seminar will discuss the impact of lifestyle in relation to exercise and nutrition within the context of type 1 and double diabetes and present opportunities for cross-working and collaboration between the Schools of Psychology and Food Science and Nutrition.
