Ian Walker

I have taken my previous clinical career in mental health into my research interests. As a specialty Registrar in Public Health, I have been involved in research projects with the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development in Low- and Middle-Income counties.

The main focus of this research has been mental health comorbidities in the context of treatment for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. We have undertaken epidemiological studies to measure the prevalence of depression in these treatment groups in Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In addition, we have piloted brief psychological interventions for patients receiving treatment for MDR-TB in Nepal and HIV/TB patients in Swaziland. I also helped to lead a systematic review on the economic costs of CVD and Diabetes in South Asia.

My role with the University is in a visiting capacity. My substantive post is with Public Health England (national public health agency of the UK Government) as a Consultant in Global Mental Health (ian.walker@phe.gov.uk). In this role, I provide technical public health assistance to countries in the field of mental health.
