Jinous is an Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry. Primary research theme: Clinical and Applied
Jinous Tahmassebi gained BDS from the University of Newcastle in 1989 and was awarded a MDentSci in 1993 from the University of Leeds. She gained her Fellowship of Paediatric Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1998 and completed her PhD in 2001. She has experience teaching all members of the dental team at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as managing and leading academic modules. She has held NHS, specialist private, community and university posts within the specialities of paediatric dentistry after completing vocational training in 1990.
She is the programme lead for the postgraduate programme in paediatric dentistry at Leeds School of Dentistry. She leads the MSc and the Professional Doctorate programme which is one of the largest paediatric dentistry postgraduate programmes in the UK. Paediatric dentistry postgraduate programme under direction of Jinous Tahmassebi was given accreditation by European Acadamy of Paediatric Dentistry visiting committee for another 6 years and in the report from the visiting committee they mentioned: "Paediatric Dentistry at Leeds remains the 'gold standard' for all EU and UK programmes". Jinous is also Chair of the University of Leeds Dental Research Ethics Committee.
Jinous Tahmassebi is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and is a referee for a number of international journals. She has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in a wide range of dental journals. Furthermore, she has co-authored two chapters in one of the leading paediatric dentistry textbooks used for undergraduate and postgraduate education. Jinous has led the supervisory team in the successful completion of 12 research projects as part of the Masters, she has also supervised the successful completion of 6 Professional Doctorate research studies.
For the last 10 years she has been an Internal Examiner for the ‘Finals’ of the Master's degree in paediatric dentistry and the Professional Doctorate in paediatric dentistry. Also since the introduction of the Professional Doctorate in paediatric dentistry in 2010, she has been an independent assessor for the postgraduate transfer viva. She currently supervises 8 Prof Doctorate, 3 Integrated PhD and1 PhD in paediatric dentistry. Jinous is the committee member of British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD)Teachers’ Branch as Research and Abstract representative on the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. She participate in selection of abstracts and judging for the BSPD National Elective Award, Max Horsnell prize, and BSPD conference abstracts. Jinous Tahmassebi is also on the education committee for European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry and She is also the United Kingdom Councillor for EAPD. Her role involves reviewing the reports of the Board members and committees and to act upon recommendations as appropriate and to represent U.K speciality of paediatric dentistry in Europe. Jinous is on the editorial board of European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) and also editorial board of Journal of Dental Science, Oral and Maxillofacial Research.

As Programme lead for Master of Science and Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry, Jinous leads solely on the strategic direction of research for the research that is carried out by the paediatric dentistry postgraduate students. She has excellent collaborations with senior academics both within the School of Dentistry and from the Faculties in the university. Her research ideas feed directly into the strategic directions of the research and innovation committee at the school level. Jinous' research interests are the management of pain and anxiety in paediatric dentistry but in particular dental sedation and child behaviour management. Jinous is involved currently as a supervisor for 8 Professional Doctorates and 3 Integrated PhD and 1 PhD research studies.

Jinous Tahmassebi is Programme Lead for postgraduate programmes in paediatric dentistry. She leads several modules for both the Master Degree and the Professional Doctorate postgraduate programmes in Paediatric Dentistry. Jinous has considerable involvement with leading, designing and delivery of other modules in Paediatric Dentistry. Since taking over as the Programme Lead in February 2016, she has led major modular changes in the MSc and Prof Doct programme which were approved by the faculty in April 2016. The changes were brought in order to enhance and improve the clinical experience of the postgraduate students studying for their MSc and Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry. Jinous has extensive involvement in both clinical and academic teaching of the postgraduate in the MSc, Professional Doctorate and Integrated PhD programme. She leads on, course assessment, the setting and marking of formative and summative assessments and examining of postgraduate students in paediatric dentistry. She is also the academic lead teacher in sedation for postgraduate students.
Jinous also has a considerable involvement in teaching, course assessment, the setting and marking of formative and summative assessments and examination of undergraduate students. She has some specific teaching responsibilities with respect to personal tutoring, contributing to the wider undergraduate dental experience, assessing and examining “Finals” BDS. She has been facilitating the supervision of the 3rd year UG project for many years as well as being the main supervisor for final year BSc research projects. This year the undergraduate group that Jinous Tahmassebi supervised won the Beaumont Undergraduate research prize at Leeds University and they were selected for the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) poster prize. She is a committee member of British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD)Teachers’ Branch and therefore is involved in organising the educational theme and topics for delegates attending the teacher’s day at the BSPD conference. This is an important annual educational day for all teacher’s in paediatric dentistry nationally and provides informative and current topics related to paediatric dentistry.
Jinous is on the Education committee for European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD). She is involved in evaluating postgraduate education and training programmes so that such programmes provide acceptable training for the current practice of Paediatric Dentistry in Europe. Also as part of her role within this committee she plans and reviews continuing education programmes for members of the EAPD and when required by EAPD She acts as an independent assessor for accreditation/re-accreditation of paediatric specialised training programmes in Europe.
