Dr Reinhard Huss


Reinhard Huss is a medical practitioner with over 30 years of experience in personal and public health care in the public and social sector. He has worked for more than 25 years in health system development and workforce capacity building. In Zimbabwe he has worked for 5 years in different positions as hospital director of a mission hospital, medical and district medical officer and registrar in the paediatric department of a central referral hospital. During this period he has been responsible for the organisation of workshops, in-service training, supervision and coaching of junior colleagues. For almost 7 years he has been working for German Technical (now International) Cooperation (GIZ) as regional project coordinator for the strengthening of primary and secondary health services and the prevention of HIV in the Central African Republic. This work has included personal, organisational and institutional capacity development of regional health services. He has been a technical desk officer for GIZ advising health projects and programmes in various countries on health system and capacity development issues.  For 7 years he has worked as a lecturer and consultant in the Institute of public health of the University of Heidelberg.

This position has included postgraduate teaching and curriculum development in areas such as how to do consultancies and quality improvement of health services. He has developed and run a blended learning programme on Management of Medicines in International Health. He has provided consultancies on health system development in several African and Asian countries. Since 2005 he has been working at the University of Leeds at the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development as Senior Teaching Fellow. He has been an investigator for EU research projects on the use of evidence in policy-making and the improvement of workforce performance in African districts. He has been the principal investigator for research into governance and corruption in the Indian health sector. He is the co-investigator for an MRC-funded project on Determinants of effectiveness of a novel community health workers programme in improving maternal and child health in Nigeria. He is the programme leader for the master of public health international and external examiner for the master programme at the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands.
